| Description : |
A 4-storey smock mill, built about 1650, and retaining its original machinery. Believed to be England’s oldest surviving smock mill. It was rebuilt in the early 19th century and was often called Loosley Row Windmill. It last worked about 1915. Used as a weekend cottage in the 1920s, repairs were done in 1934 after which its condition gradually deteriorated. Restored to working order by the Chiltern Society since 1971. The 17th century wooden machinery is too fragile to be used for milling. However, weather permitting, we try to have the sails turning on the Sunday of National Mills Weekend each year. |
